INTRODUCTION

RPLIDAR A1 is a low-cost 360-degree 2D laser scanner (LIDAR) solution developed by SLAMTEC. The system can perform a 360-degree scan within a 6-meter range. The produced 2D point cloud data can be used in mapping, localization and object/environment modeling. RPLIDAR A1’s scanning frequency reached 5.5 hz when sampling 360 points each round. And it can be configured up to 10 hz maximum. RPLIDAR A1 is basically a laser triangulation measurement system. It can work excellently in all kinds of indoor and outdoor environments without sunlight. If you need a different range, we can provide two other models. Two years ago I purchased the A1M8-R5 and was very satisfied with its performance with both the Rpi and Nano families of SBCs.The quality of the R6 model is just as good as the R5. I am running the R6 with an Rpi 4B 4GB running Donkeycar v 4.3 and the range/angle data capture is all that I could ask for.I highly recommend the A1M8-R6 if you can't find the cash for the A2.

I purchased this to learn and experiment with 3D imaging. Using the Slamtec SDK and basic OpenGL, I was able to build a real-time room measuring and display system on my Mac (macOS). The device is very quiet and comes with pegs so that you can place it on a table, bench or mount it to a robot. Sadly, the Slamtec tools (Robostudio) are only for Windows, but the SDK works for macOS, Linux and RPi. I have tested on macOS. You can search Github for "OpenGL-LIDAR-Display" for more information. BONUS: The kit also includes a set of wires to make it easier to use with the GPIO headers on a Raspberry Pi. You can buy them separate for $10 so that was a nice surprise.

Works fantastic. It's quiet and smooth. I have ROS (Robot Operating System) installed on my computer and all I had to do was to plug it in and it started publishing real time scans.

Worked well, but this is 2020. Its an older model and the software is outdated/unsupported. That being said, I got my money out of it. Works well for non-critical distance measurements.

I loaded up the windows demo and it worked like a charm, but I couldn’t find any Linux drivers for the device and since all of my robots run Linux I ended up returning it

I use this lidar, along with an arduino, to map a space and create location details for people moving in the space. This is primarily for an interactive art installation where the location of people in a room will activate specific sounds. After a lot of trial and error, it worked perfectly.

this device seems high quality, it does as it specified, except for repeatability. in my noisy environment with several light sources it had a repeatability of 4cm. mac software features are a little scarce, but for windows users lots of options. there also are several github open source groups for these types of sensors.

If you are building a ROS based robot of any sort this unit will work fine. It's supported by every ROS node I've tried including: RPLIDAR, AMCL, and RVIZ.
